Minimally Invasive
Direct Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery

Some patients are candidates for a new surgical procedure: Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery (MIDCAB). Ohio Valley HeartCare's cardiovascular surgeons may perform MIDCAB if the patient's left anterior descending coronary artery and/or the right coronary artery is obstructed.

MIDCAB offers many benefits over traditional coronary artery bypass graft surgery, including a shorter healing time, reduced side effects, a shorter time spent in the Cardiac Recovery Unit and a shorter hospital stay (2-4 days). This is a much less invasive procedure than traditional surgery and does not require the patient to be placed on a cardiopulmonary bypass pump.

While MIDCAB is a tremendous advancement in cardiovascular surgery, please note it cannot be performed on all patients.

How It Works

Rather than making a long breastbone incision and leg incision, your Ohio Valley HeartCare surgeon makes a small three-inch incision beneath your left and/or right breast for the MIDCAB procedure, depending on which artery requires bypass. The internal mammary artery located in your chest wall will be used to bypass the blockage in your coronary artery.

Because a cardiopulmonary bypass pump is not used in the MIDCAB procedure, you will not experience potential side effects from the pump. Further, you will not have the breathing tube in your throat during a MIDCAB for as long as you would in traditional surgery. You also have less risk of experiencing bleeding complications in this new procedure, and your incision healing time will be shorter. Your overall recovery time and return to an active lifestyle will be shorter.
