Cardiac Catheterization - What to Expect During These Procedures

You are awake during the procedure; however, your physician may sedate you as necessary. Cardiac catheterization is performed under local anesthesia. Your arm or your leg is anesthetized, depending on where the catheter is inserted.

Back to Cardiac Catheterization...

A catheter will be placed in your artery and another in your vein. Your physician guides the catheters through the blood vessels into your heart.

During this time, it is normal to experience some heart palpitations. You may feel a pressure sensation when the catheter is in place, and you may feel hot or flush for several seconds when the contrast medium is injected.

You must lie still for about four hours following the procedure. During that time, medical specialists monitor your blood pressure and regularly check the catheter's insertion point to ensure there is no bleeding. You will also drink fluids to help your kidneys "flush" the dye from your body.
