Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac catheterization enables your doctor to examine your heart's interior to diagnose a variety of potential heart problems. Your physician may recommend this procedure if you suffer from coronary artery disease, valve problems, chest pain, shortness of breath or if other diagnostic tests, such as a stress test or echocardiogram, indicate possible heart problems.

How It Works

An X-ray-guided catheter (thin tube) is inserted through an artery in either your leg or arm. It is guided into the area of the heart that requires examination.

A contrast medium is injected through the catheter which enables your cardiologist to take X-ray pictures (angiograms) of the heart. These images can show problems with blood flow - such as obstructions - and heart wall movement.
