Risk Factors & Heart Disease
Years of study and extensive clinical data have identified various factors that can increase your risk of heart disease. These risks can be divided into two classifications: Major Risk Factors and Contributing Risk Factors
- Major Risk Factors are those that medical research has conclusively associated with a significant increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease. Contributing factors are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, however their significance and prevalence have not yet been precisely determined.
- Contributing Risk Factors - There are many factors - personal, lifestyle and medical - that can affect your risk for developing heart disease. Some factors, such as smoking, are within your power to control. Others, such as a family history of heart disease, are risks beyond your control. But one thing is certain, by working to eliminate controllable risk factors and by adopting a healthier lifestyle, you can greatly reduce your risk of heart disease.
