Tackling an Expensive Equation

Despite advances in recent years, heart disease remains America's number one killer. It's not surprising, then, that the nation spends more for cardiovascular disease care than for any other disease category.

Just how much of this tab does business wind up paying?

The answer: More than you think.

Here are some troubling statistics:

  • Although heart disease rates are highest among retirees and Medicare recipients, many people between the prime working ages of 45 and 65 are also affected by cardiovascular events.

  • Forty-five percent of heart attacks and 15 percent of heart disease deaths occur in people under age 65.

  • The number of workers with heart disease is likely to increase as the population ages and as people live longer. The American Heart Association reports that 60.8 million American men and women have some form of cardiovascular disease.

The equation doesn't get any better when you factor in the indirect cost of lost productivity and long-term disability due to cardiovascular disease. Add it all up and the cost to American business climbs to a staggering $298.2 billion each year, according to the American Heart Association.

Heart disease is a number that hits your bottom line every day through higher health care and disability insurance premiums, lost productivity and employee absenteeism.

But now you can do something for your business -- and for your employees -- that can help turn the equation back to your favor.

Creating Proactive Employer Solutions

CardioVention is a breakthrough from the medical experts at Ohio Valley HeartCare. This program is designed to identify and modify your employees' cardiovascular risk factors, improve their cardiovascular wellness, and reduce their risk of heart attack and stroke.

Here's how our program works. For a minimal charge, our trained clinical staff will come to your worksite to screen employees for their coronary risk profiles. This analysis determines individual heart disease risk factors and looks at such areas as body mass, total and HDL cholesterol levels, blood pressure, family history, aerobic exercise and stress levels.

Individuals determined to be at high risk based on the National Cholesterol Education Program Guidelines will be notified by CardioVention's clinicians at a later date recommending further screening. While some employees may choose to contact their primary care physicians to continue their evaluation, they may also continue to work with CardioVention.

The employee is welcome to contact our CardioVention staff to schedule a more comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment, for which there is a nominal fee. Many employers choose to defray part or the entire fee to encourage employees to follow through with the comprehensive evaluation.

CardioVention Makes it Easy

The CardioVention staff will come to your worksite and administer cardiovascular risk assessments to your employees. The assessment starts with a participant questionnaire. Then, our trained clinical staff measures blood pressure and resting heart rate levels. Finally, we obtain total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and blood sugar levels through a simple finger-stick measurement.

The information is computer-analyzed and within minutes the employee receives a confidential individualized report. The report identifies specific risk areas, such as elevated cholesterol levels, blood pressure concerns, too little exercise, and too much fat intake. The report also suggests methods to reduce these risks.

Screenings are scheduled at times convenient for your specific worksite situation. Our staff will accommodate shift workers and make every effort to minimize the time individuals are away from their respective jobs.

By successfully identifying and monitoring your employees' heart disease risk factors, we can help make a dramatic impact on the most important line of all: your organization's bottom line.
